JewDriver!
Apr. 2nd, 2006 01:30 pmLast night I was with an unfortunately small crowd to see JewDriver, a Jewish hardcore band out of Oakland, California.
Well, the crowd wasn't that small. I think it probably got to be about 50 people, (I've been to shows with literally 10 people in the crowd,) but it was still too woefully small for a double bill of the Bay Area's premeire jewish skinhead group and The Shemps. The Shemps were really good, as was Jesus Fucking Christ, my old friend Dave Edwardson's band. (Edwardson is one of the people who got me into the punk scene some ** mumble mumble ** years ago!)
JewDriver claims to be the worst band in Oakland, but it ain't so. Practicers of Jew-jitsu and bagelology, they play hardcore songs about things like Manischewitz, and co-opt Aryan Youth and fascist symbols. One of their flyers was in the form of a Confederate flag, only with stars of David rather than regular stars. The singer has been known to dress a la' de rigeur skinhead, as have other members of the band. (The guitar player was wearing a kilt last night!) Apparently, they even cover a Skrewdriver song, with slightly altered lyrics, of course!
Their premise is that they're being tongue-in-cheek, and they are a very silly band, but in an area with a strong and dedicated Jewish population, (I've had chicken schnitzel more times than I can count,) I think it's really cool that they're taking this tact, for a lot of Jewish activists and community leaders around here, (In my humble and gentile opinion,) can take themselves just a bit too seriously. This kind of levity is far from being counter productive, and this kind of cultural activism and goofiness is enough to make a few heathens and gentiles mad for matzah, and give a new and modern respect to Jewish ethnic pride. After all, you have to have some kind of cajone's to be heebs in Nazi helmets, boots and suspenders, openly mocking fascists!.
I just wonder what a JewDriver's seder is like!
