A Great Divide?
Mar. 7th, 2008 12:09 pmA post I made today in
obama_2008!
Many people, from high-profile political pundits to amateur political speculators like Jane and John Six-pack on the street, have been musing about a possible effect of the Obama-Clinton rivalry.
The competition between Obama and Clinton is very intense, so instense that many people believe a powerful rift is forming between Obama and Clinton supporters, the kind of rift that could carry over into the general election. In other words, many Obamanites are so frothed about the Clinton camp that they would balk at voting for Hilary in the general election, and the Clintonites wouldn't be able to bring themselves to vote for Obama. In other words, this intense rivarly could result in a progressive split that would make the Nader effect in 2000 look like a drop in the pond and hand the presidency to McCain on a silver platter, a man who has expressed his intentions to continue the disastrous bush policies that have brought this country to the brink of economic and foreign policy ruin.
Is this concern legitimate? Do both camps have so many unbendable supporters that's there's no chance they will come around to the other side, regardless of which side wins? Or is it really just over-hyped political speculation, that in the end we will stick to our principles and vote for the better candidate, even if we believe it's really just another lesser-than-two-evils kinda deal? Will it really be too great a divide?
