So I had one lil' adventure in Arizona a little more than a week ago, when I went down there for the Del Sol Ragnar Relay. I realized I needed a place to stay for the evening, so I quickly booked a cheapo room near the Phoenix airport through Priceline.. The Priceline page told me that the hotel was near the airport and had a shuttle service.
My teammates dropped me off at my hotel, and I quickly learned that Priceline wasn't exactly accurate when it came to airport hotels. The desk clerk told me they were no where near the airport, and that there was no airport shuttle service. He informed me that they were 15 miles away from the airport, and that the only realistic way to get to the airport was by a $35 cab ride.
I was too tired and it was late, so I decided what the hell, I would just crash out there and figure out how to get to the airport in the morning. The next day I asked the morning desk clerk about getting to the Phoenix airport. He told me the airport was ten miles away, but he knew of a cab seervice that could get me to the airpot for $15.
I Google mapped the hotel and airport. It turned out it was only seven miles away from the airport. I wandered around outside of my hotel and saw a bus at a bus stop. The desk clerks had told me there was no realistic way to get to the airport by bus. I talked to the bus driver anyways, and he told me I could catch a bus and transfer to another bus to get to the airport, all for $1.75 fare.
When I got on the appropriate bus, the bus driver told me I could take his bus to the free airport shuttle, once he got near downtown after about a 45 minute drive, and he waved me off when I tried to pay the fare.
So I went from being fifteen miles out and spending 35 clams for a cab to catching a 7 mile bus trip and a shuttle for free. Which goes to show you: Don't trust Priceline and ask around. You'll be glad you did!
And yeah, I sent a blast to Priceline, and I haven't heard back from them. William Shatner can suck it! >:P
