So like I said in my previous post is that I think it's a sad state of affairs when the announcement that an American company is actually going to manufacture something in the US is news. People were encouraging me to be positive about this bit of news, and not to poo it.
I can't help it. The whole thing makes me so angry I could just spit. One company setting up one arm of its manufacturing wing in this country is not nearly enough. Like I said before, this should not be news! People have become so set with the idea that manufacturing is exported that people have become jaded to the idea, a "That's th' way it is." kind of attitude towards the whole thing.
The kind of reaction I want to see is people saying "Good! Now when are all those other companies going to start doing it?" I don't want to see cheering, I want to see crowds with the pitchforks and torches and people demanding that our government screw over comapnies that ship jobs overseas, and to tax and penalize comapnies that exploit third world labor. And ask these companies what they're doing with their overseas labor force. Are they making sure they're getting reasonable wages and hours, and in good working conditions? (Not bloody likely!)
Ask Apple when they're going to set up more manufacturing in the US. Another FYI, Apple is keeping billions of dollars in assets outside of the US so it doesn't get taxed. How about them apples? (So to speak?) And with its other products and lines, it still exploits cheap labor outside the US and often in foul working environments.
This whole US move was also inspired by their bad press as of late, and general bad press about corporations at large. It's true, companies set up business operations in order to enhance their public image, and I'm positive that's what this is. Don't eat it up! Just Apple? How about all of those other companies?
I can understand that people want to celebrate some positive news, especially considering all of the rotten economic news we always hear and feel, (And also since many of us are not making enough $$ and don't have enough benefits,) but let's not applaud this one little carrot so loudly. Hands on hips, look them in the eye and ask, "Yeah that's nice, but what else are you going to do?"
Manufacturing one product line in the US isn't enough. They have to do more, and so do so many other companies.
( Read it n' weep! )
